What is the most significant information I must know about risperidone?

Risperidone is not for use in psychotic conditions related to dementia. Risperidone may reason heart failure, sudden death, or pneumonia in older adults with dementia-related conditions.

What is risperidone?

Risperidone is an antipsychotic medicine. It works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain.

Risperidone is used to treat schizophrenia and symptoms of bipolar mess (manic depression). Risperidone is also used in autistic children to treat symptoms of irritability.

Risperidone may also be used for purposes not listed in this medicine guide.

What must I discuss with my healthcare provider till taking risperidone?

Risperidone is not for use in psychotic conditions related to dementia. Risperidone may reason heart failure, sudden death, or pneumonia in older adults with dementia-related conditions.

• You must not use this medicine if you are allergic to risperidone.

• To create certain you can safely take risperidone, speak your doctor if you have any of these another conditions:

However, you may have withdrawal symptoms or another problems if you stop taking your medication during pregnancy. If you become pregnant while taking risperidone, do not stop taking it without your doctor's advice.

Risperidone can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing child. You must not breast-feed while taking risperidone.

• Do not give this medication to a baby without a doctor's advice.

How must I take risperidone?

• Take exactly as predesigned by your doctor. Do not take in larger or less amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

Risperidone can be taken with or without food.

• To take risperidone orally disintegrating tablets (Risperdal M-Tabs):

· Hold the tablet in its blister pack before you are ready to take the medication. Open the package and peel back the foil from the tablet blister. Do not push a tablet through the foil or you may hurt the tablet.

· Using dry hands, remove the tablet and seat it in your mouth. It will begin to dissolve right away.

· Do not swallow the tablet intact. Let it to dissolve in your mouth without chewing.

· Swallow different times as the tablet dissolves. If desired, you may drink liquid after the tablet is completely dissolved.

• Use risperidone regularly to get the most benefit. Get your prescription refilled till you run out of medication completely.

• Measure the liquid form of risperidone with a particular dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.

• Do not mix the liquid form of risperidone with cola or tea.

• It may take different weeks till your symptoms improve. Hold using the medicine as directed and speak your doctor if your symptoms do not improve.

• Store at room temperature away from moisture, easy, and heat. Do not let the liquid form of risperidone to freeze.

What happens if I miss a dose?

• Take the missed doze as soon as you remember. Skip the missed doze if it is nearly time for your following scheduled doze. Do not take extra medication to create up the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

• Search abnormal medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

• Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, quick heart course, feeling light-headed, fainting, and restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck.

What must I avoid while taking risperidone?

• While you are taking risperidone, you may be more sensitive to temperature extremes such as very hot or cool conditions. Avoid getting too cool, or becoming overheated or dehydrated. What are the possible side effects of risperidone?

• Get abnormal medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your person, lips, tongue, or throat.

• Stop taking risperidone and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

· fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, quick or uneven heartbeats;

· restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck;

· drooling, tremor (uncontrolled shaking);

· seizure (convulsions);

· fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;

· nosebleeds;

· white patches or sores internal your mouth or on your lips;

· trouble swallowing;

· feeling like you might pass out; or

· penis erection that is painful or lasts 4 hours or longer.

• Smaller serious side effects may include:

· weight gain;

· feeling hot or cold;

· headache, dizziness;

· drowsiness, weary feeling;

· dry mouth, heighten appetite;

· feeling restless or anxious;

· sleep problems (insomnia);

· nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation;

· cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose; or

· mild skin rash.

What another drugs will affect risperidone?

• Till you take risperidone, speak your doctor if you regularly use another medicines that create you sleepy (such as cool or allergy medication, narcotic pain medication, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medication for seizures, depression, or anxiety). They can add to sleepiness caused by risperidone.

• Also speak your doctor if you are taking any of the next medicines:

· carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Equetro, Tegretol);

· cimetidine (Tagamet) or ranitidine (Zantac);

· clozapine (Clozaril);

· fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem, Symbyax) or paroxetine (Paxil);

· phenytoin (Dilantin) or valproic acid (valproate, Depakene, Stavzor);

· phenobarbital (Solfoton);

· rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifater); or

· medicines used to treat Parkinson's Malady such as levodopa (Dopar, Larodopa, Sinemet, Atamet, others), bromocriptine (Parlodel, others), pergolide (Permax), pramipexole (Mirapex), or ropinirole (Requip).

• This list is not complete and another drugs may interact with risperidone. Speak your doctor about all medications you use. This includes prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal commodity. Do not start a new medicine without telling your doctor.
