What is the most significant information I must know about cefotetan?

• You must not use this medicine if you are allergic to cefotetan, or to similar antibiotics, such as Ceftin, Cefzil, Keflex, Omnicef, and others.

• Till using this medicine, speak your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs (especially penicillin). Also speak your doctor if you have kidney malady or a history of intestinal problems.

• Use this medication for the full predesigned length of time. Your symptoms may improve till the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also magnify your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Cefotetan will not treat a viral infection such as the general cool or flu.

• Antibiotic medicines can reason diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, stop using cefotetan and call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medication unless your doctor tells you to.

What is cefotetan?

Cefotetan is a cephalosporin (SEF a low spor in) antibiotic. It works by fighting bacteria in your body.

Cefotetan is used to treat much various types of infections caused by bacteria.

Cefotetan may also be used for purposes not listed in this medicine guide.

What must I discuss with my healthcare provider till using cefotetan?

• You must not use this medicine if you are allergic to cefotetan or to another cephalosporin antibiotics, such as:

· cefaclor (Raniclor);

· cefadroxil (Duricef);

· cefazolin (Ancef);

· cefditoren (Spectracef);

· cefpodoxime (Vantin);

· cefprozil (Cefzil);

· ceftibuten (Cedax);

· cefuroxime (Ceftin);

· cephalexin (Keflex); or

· cephradine (Velosef), and others.

• To create certain you can safely use cefotetan, speak your doctor if you have any of these another conditions:

· kidney malady (or if you are on dialysis);

· a history of intestinal problems, such as colitis; or

· if you are allergic to any drugs (especially penicillins).

• FDA pregnancy category B. This medicine is not expected to be deleterious to an unborn child. Speak your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.

Cefotetan can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing child. Do not use this medicine without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

How is cefotetan given?

• Use exactly as predesigned by your doctor. Do not use in larger or less amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

Cefotetan is injected into a muscle or into a vein through an IV. You may be shown how to use injections at house. Do not self-inject this medication if you do not fully understand how to give the injection and properly dispose of used needles, IV tubing, and another items used to inject the medicine.

Cefotetan is generally given once each 12 hours for 5 to 10 days. Follow your doctor's instructions very carefully.

• If you are receiving this medicine just till a surgery to prevent infection, you may receive only one doze.

• You may need to mix cefotetan with a liquid (diluent) till using it. If you are using the injections at house, be certain you understand how to properly mix and store the medicine. Use only the diluent your doctor has recommended.

After mixing your medication, you will need to use it within a determined number of hours or days. This will depend on the diluent and how you store the mixture (at room temperature, in a refrigerator, or frozen). Carefully follow the mixing and storage instructions provided with your medication. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions.

• This medicine can reason unusual results with determined medical trials, including lab trials for glucose (sugar) in the urine. Speak any doctor who treats you that you are using cefotetan.

• Use this medication for the full predesigned length of time. Your symptoms may improve till the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also magnify your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Cefotetan will not treat a viral infection such as the general cool or flu.

• Store unmixed cefotetan powder at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.

• If your medication was provided in a frozen form or was frozen after mixing, thaw it in a refrigerator or at room temperature. Do not warm in a microwave or boiling water. Use the medication as soon as possible after thawing it. Do not refreeze.

• Do not use the medicine if it looks cloudy or has any particles in it. Call your doctor for a new prescription.

What happens if I miss a dose?

• Use the missed doze as soon as you remember. Skip the missed doze if it is nearly time for your following scheduled doze. Do not use extra medication to create up the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

• Search abnormal medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

• Overdose symptoms may include severe forms of some of the side effects listed in this medicine guide.

What must I avoid while using cefotetan?

• Drinking alcohol within 72 hours after using cefotetan can reason unpleasant side effects such as headache, sweating, quick heart course, and flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling).

• Antibiotic medicines can reason diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, stop using cefotetan and call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medication unless your doctor tells you to.

What are the possible side effects of cefotetan?

• Get abnormal medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your person, lips, tongue, or throat.

• Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

· diarrhea that is watery or bloody;

· chest pain;

· fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;

· light bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin;

· severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness;

· seizure (convulsions);

· pale skin, dark colored urine, fever, confusion or weakness;

· jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);

· heighten thirst, loss of appetite, swelling, weight gain, feeling short of breath, urinating smaller than normal or not at all; or

· severe skin reaction -- fever, sore throat, swelling in your person or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the person or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.

• Smaller serious side effects may include:

· nausea, vomiting;

· stomach pain;

· mild diarrhea;

· vaginal itching or discharge; or

· pain, swelling, redness, or bruising where the medication was injected.

What another drugs will affect cefotetan?

• Speak your doctor about all another medications you use, especially other injected antibiotic, such as:

· amikacin (Amikin);

· gentamicin (Garamycin);

· kanamycin (Kantrex);

· neomycin (Neo Fradin, Neo Tab);

· paromomycin (Humatin, Paromycin);

· streptomycin; or

· tobramycin (Nebcin, Tobi).

• This list is not complete and another drugs may interact with cefotetan. Speak your doctor about all medications you use. This includes prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal commodity. Do not start a new medicine without telling your doctor.
