Rifampicin causes a very marked increase in the clearance of
diazepam (4-fold),
midazolam (AUC reduced by 96%), nitrazepam (83%),
triazolam (AUC reduced by 95%),
zaleplon (AUC reduced by 80%),
zolpidem (AUC reduced by 73%) and zopiclone (AUC reduced by 82%).
Benzodiazepines that are metabolised similarly (e.g. chlordiazepoxide, flurazepam) are expected to interact in the same way.
The effects of these
benzodiazepines may be almost completely abolished if
rifampicin is given. Temazepam appears to be a non-interacting alternative.
