ALCOHOL AND WARFARIN AND OTHER ORAL ANTICOAGULANTS

The effects of anticoagulants such as warfarin are unlikely to be changed in those with normal liver function who drink small or moderate amounts of alcohol, but heavy drinkers or patients with some liver disease may show considerable fluctuations in their prothrombin times when they drink alcohol.
Patients should be counselled about appropriate alcohol consumption when they start anticoagulant therapy.
