Theophylline serum levels can be markedly and rapidly increased by the concurrent use of
fluvoxamine.
Toxicity has occurred.
Ideally concurrent use should be avoided. If this is not possible, reduce the
theophylline dose and monitor
theophylline levels. Some preliminary
clinical evidence suggests that fluoxetine and citalopram (and therefore probably escitalopram) may not interact with
theophylline, and
in vitro evidence suggests that
paroxetine and sertraline are also unlikely to interact. They may therefore be suitable alternatives.
