The interactions of
probenecid and
pyrazinamide and their effects on the excretion of uric acid are complex. The overall effect is that if
probenecid were to be used to treat the hyperuricaemia caused by
pyrazinamide, the normal uricosuric effects of
probenecid would be diminished and larger doses would be required.
Note that hyperuricaemia is a
contraindication to
pyrazinamide use and it should be stopped if gouty arthritis occurs.
