Sodium
valproate increases the AUC of zidovudine by 80%. In one case sodium
valproate increased
serum zidovudine levels by up to 3-fold, and increased the CSF levels of zidovudine by 74%.
It would seem prudent to monitor for zidovudine adverse effects and possible
toxicity. Other
NRTIs do not undergo significant glucuronidation and are therefore not expected to interact in this way with sodium
valproate.
