Phenytoin halves the AUC of
mexiletine. Fosphenytoin, a prodrug of
phenytoin, may interact similarly.
It seems likely that the fall in
mexiletine levels will be clinically important in at least some individuals. Monitor for
mexiletine efficacy, and where possible monitor
mexiletine levels. Raise the dosage if necessary.
