What is lucinactant?

Lucinactant is a lung surface acting agent, or "surfactant." It helps the lungs function normally. Lucinactant is similar to the natural fluid in the lungs that helps sustain effective breathing.

Lucinactant is used to treat or prevent respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in a premature child whose lungs have not fully developed.

Lucinactant may also be used for purposes not listed in this medicine guide.

What must I discuss with my healthcare provider till treatment with lucinactant?

• To excellent participate in the care of your child while he or she is in the NICU, carefully follow all instructions provided by your baby's caregivers.

How is lucinactant given?

Lucinactant is given directly into the baby's lungs through a breathing pipe. Your child will receive this medicine in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) or similar hospital setting.

• The breathing pipe is connected to a ventilator (a car that moves air in and out of the lungs to help your child breathe easier and get satis oxygen).

Lucinactant is given as soon as possible after the baby's birth, generally within 30 minutes.

• Your baby's breathing, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and another vital signs will be watched closely during treatment with lucinactant.

What happens if I miss a dose?

• Since lucinactant is given as needed by a healthcare professional, it is not likely that your child will miss a dose.

What happens if I overdose?

• Since lucinactant is given in a controlled medical setting by a healthcare professional, an overdose is not likely to occur. However, an overdose of lucinactant is not expected to manufacture life-threatening symptoms.

What must I avoid during treatment with lucinactant?

• Follow your doctor's instructions about any restrictions in feeding, medications, or activity after your child has been treated with lucinactant.

What are the possible side effects of lucinactant?

Lucinactant causes little side effects. There is a possibility that the child will have breathing difficulties during the lucinactant treatment, and these problems may require further treatment by health care professionals.
