What is the most significant information I must know about lubiprostone?
• Do not take lubiprostone if you have severe diarrhea. Call your doctor for instructions.
• Call your doctor at once if you have severe or ongoing nausea or diarrhea.
What is lubiprostone?
• Lubiprostone increases the secretion of fluid in your intestines to help create it easier to pass stools (bowel movements).
• Lubiprostone is used to treat chronic constipation, or constipation caused by opioid (narcotic) pain medication.
• Lubiprostone may also be used to treat irritable bowel syndrome in women with constipation as the main symptom.
• Lubiprostone is for use only in adults.
• Lubiprostone may also be used for purposes not listed in this medicine guide.
What must I discuss with my health care provider till taking lubiprostone?
• You must not use this medicine if you have a blockage in your digestive tract, or if you have severe diarrhea.
• To create certain lubiprostone is safety for you, tell your doctor if you have any another reason for obstruction in your gastrointestinal (digestive) system, such as:
· gallstones;
· Crohn's disease;
· Hirschsprung's disease;
· impacted bowel movement;
· diverticulitis, polyps; or
· a history of hernia.
• Also speak your doctor if you have liver disease.
• FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether lubiprostone will harm an unborn child. Speak your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication.
• It is not known whether lubiprostone passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing child. However, a nursing child could develop diarrhea if the mother takes lubiprostone while breast-feeding. Speak your doctor if you are breast-feeding a child, and conversation with your doctor if the child develops diarrhea.
• Lubiprostone must not be given to a child.
How must I take lubiprostone?
• Lubiprostone is generally taken twice daily. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medication in larger or less amounts or for longer than recommended.
• Take lubiprostone with food.
• Drink a full glass of water when you take this medication.
• Do not crush, chew, interrupt, or open a lubiprostone capsule. Swallow it intact.
• You may have tightness in your chest or feel short of breath within 1 hour after taking lubiprostone. This side effect must go away within 3 hours, but it may occur again when you take your following doze. Conversation with your doctor if this side effect becomes bothersome.
• Do not take lubiprostone if you have severe diarrhea. Call your doctor for instructions.
• Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
What happens if I miss a dose?
• Take the missed doze as soon as you remember. Skip the missed doze if it is nearly time for your following scheduled doze. Do not take extra medication to create up the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
• Search abnormal medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.
What must I avoid while taking lubiprostone?
• Follow your doctor's instructions about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity.
What are the possible side effects of lubiprostone?
• Get abnormal medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your person, lips, tongue, or throat.
• Call your doctor at once if you have severe or ongoing nausea or diarrhea.
• General side effects may include:
· mild nausea, stomach pain;
· mild diarrhea, gas, bloating; or
· headache.

• Speak your doctor if you take methadone.
