What is lomustine?

Lomustine is a cancer medicine that interferes with the growth of cancer cells and slows their spread in the body.

Lomustine is used to treat brain tumors and Hodgkin's disease.

Lomustine is sometimes given with another cancer medications.

Lomustine may also be used for purposes not listed in this medicine guide.

What must I discuss with my healthcare provider till taking lomustine?

• You must not use this medicine if you are allergic to it.

• To create certain lomustine is safety for you, speak your doctor if you have:

· bone marrow suppression;

· liver disease;

· kidney malady; or

· a history of lung or breathing problems.

• FDA pregnancy category D. Do not use lomustine if you are pregnant. It could harm the unborn child. Use effective birth control, and speak your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment.

• It is not known whether lomustine passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing child. Speak your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

How must I take lomustine?

• Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medication in larger or less amounts or for longer than recommended.

Lomustine is generally taken once each 6 weeks. To get the correct doze, you may need to take 2 or more capsules that are various types and colors. Follow your doctor's dosing instructions very carefully.

Lomustine can reason nausea and vomiting but this must recent smaller than 24 hours after your doze. You may have loss of appetite that lasts for different days. Taking lomustine on an empty stomach may reduce nausea and vomiting. You may also be given anti-nausea medications. Call your doctor if you vomit right after taking a lomustine capsule.

• Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture. Hold the bottle tightly closed before you are ready to take the medicine.

• Wear disposable rubber gloves when you handle a lomustine capsule. Throw the gloves away after one use.

• Do not open the lomustine capsule. Do not use a broken pill. The medication from a broken pill can be dangerous if it gets on your skin. If this occurs, wash with soap and water. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to safely handle and dispose of a broken capsule.

What happens if I miss a dose?

• Call your doctor for instructions if you miss a doze of lomustine.

What happens if I overdose?

• Search abnormal medical attention if you think you have used too many of this medicine.

What must I avoid while taking lomustine?

• Avoid being around people who are sick or have infections. Speak your doctor at once if you develop signs of infection.

Do not receive a "live" vaccine while using lomustine, and avoid coming into contact with anyone who has recently received a live vaccine. There is a chance that the virus could be passed on to you. Live vaccines include measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), rotavirus, typhoid, yellow fever, varicella (chickenpox), zoster (shingles), and nasal flu (influenza) vaccine.

• This medication can pass into body fluids (including urine, feces, vomit, semen, vaginal fluid). For at least 48 hours after you receive a doze, avoid allowing your body fluids to come into contact with your hands or another surfaces. Patients and caregivers must wear rubber gloves while cleaning up body fluids, handling contaminated trash or laundry or changing diapers. Wash hands till and after removing gloves. Wash soiled clothing and linens apart from another laundry.

Body fluids must not be handled by a woman who is pregnant or who may become pregnant. Use condoms during sexual activity to avoid exposure to body fluids.

What are the possible side effects of lomustine?

• Get abnormal medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your person, lips, tongue, or throat.

• Call your doctor at once if you have:

· signs of infection such as fever, chills, sore throat, light bruising or bleeding;

· wheezing, rapid breathing, feeling short of breath;

· chest pain, dry cough, fever, feeling ill;

· urinating smaller than normal or not at all;

· confusion, mood changes, heighten thirst;

· swelling in your ankles or feet;

· jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or

· white patches or sores internal your mouth or on your lips.

• General side effects may include:

· loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting;

· temporary hair loss;

· vision problems; or

· feeling weak or tired.

• This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may message side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
