A man taking fluoxetine experienced
symptoms of the
serotonin syndrome after ingesting the psychoactive beverage
ayahuasca (also known as caapi, daime, hoasca, natema, yage), which is characteristically derived from the vine Banisteriopsis caapi.
This appears to be the only report of an interaction. However as
ayahuasca contains monoamine oxidase-inhibiting harmala alkaloids concurrent use may potentially cause
serotonin syndrome.
