GANCICLOVIR AND IMIPENEM

The manufacturer notes that generalised seizures have been reported in patients who received ganciclovir with imipenem-cilastatin. Note that both ganciclovir and imipenem alone may cause seizures. Valganciclovir is a prodrug of ganciclovir and would therefore be expected to interact similarly.
The manufacturer recommends that ganciclovir and its prodrug valganciclovir should not be used concurrently with imipenem unless the benefits outweigh the risks.
