FOOD AND WARFARIN AND OTHER ORAL ANTICOAGULANTS - CRANBERRY JUICE
In some patients the anticoagulant effects of warfarin were increased after they drank cranberry juice. One patient had a very marked increase and died from a haemorrhage, while a further patient had a reduction in his INR. However, subsequent controlled studies suggest that no interaction occurs.
The current recommendation of the CSM/MHRA in the UK is that patients taking warfarin should limit or avoid drinking cranberry juice. They also advise similar precautions with other cranberry products (such as capsules or concentrates).
