What is the most significant information I must know about ferrous gluconate?

• Till using this medicine, speak your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have iron overload syndrome, hemolytic anemia (a lack of red blood cells), porphyria (a genetic enzyme mess that causes symptoms affecting the skin or nervous system), thalassemia (a genetic mess of red blood cells), kidney or liver malady, if you are an alcoholic, or if you receive regular blood transfusions.

• Search abnormal medical attention if you think you have used too many of this medication, or if anyone has accidentally swallowed it. An overdose of iron can be fatal, especially in a young baby.

• Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, severe nausea or stomach pain, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds, shallow breathing, weak and rapid pulse, cool or clammy skin, blue lips, and seizure (convulsions).

• Take ferrous gluconate on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour till or 2 hours after a meal. Avoid taking antacids or antibiotics within 2 hours till or after taking ferrous gluconate .

• Ferrous gluconate is only part of a complete program of treatment that may also include a particular diet. It is very significant to follow the diet plan created for you by your doctor or nutrition counselor. You must become very familiar with the list of foods you must ate to create certain you get satis iron from both your diet and your medication.

What is ferrous gluconate?

• Ferrous gluconate is a type of iron. You normally get iron from the foods you ate. In your body, iron becomes a part of your hemoglobin (HEEM o glo bin) and myoglobin (MY o glo bin). Hemoglobin carries oxygen through your blood to tissues and organs. Myoglobin helps your muscle cells store oxygen.

• Ferrous gluconate is used to treat iron deficiency anemia (a lack of red blood cells caused by having too few iron in the body).

• Ferrous gluconate may also be used for purposes another than those listed in this medicine guide.

What must I discuss with my healthcare provider till taking ferrous gluconate?

• Till using this medicine, speak your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs or food dyes, or if you have:

· iron overload syndrome;

· hemolytic anemia (a lack of red blood cells);

· porphyria (a genetic enzyme mess that causes symptoms affecting the skin or nervous system);

· thalassemia (a genetic mess of red blood cells);

· liver or kidney disease;

· if you are an alcoholic; or

· if you receive regular blood transfusions.

• If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use ferrous gluconate, or you may need a doze adjustment or particular trials during treatment.

• It is not known whether this medicine could be deleterious to an unborn child. Speak your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment.

• It is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing child. Do not use this medicine without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

• Do not give ferrous gluconate to a baby without the advice of a doctor.

How must I take ferrous gluconate?

• Use this medicine exactly as directed on the label, or as predesigned by your doctor. Do not use it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended.

• Take ferrous gluconate on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour till or 2 hours after a meal. Avoid taking antacids or antibiotics within 2 hours till or after taking ferrous gluconate .

• Take this medicine with a full glass of water.

• Do not crush, chew, or interrupt a ferrous gluconate tablet or capsule. Swallow the pill whole.

• Measure the liquid medication with a marked measuring spoon or medication cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.

• Ferrous gluconate can stain your teeth, but this effect is temporary. To prevent tooth staining, mix the liquid form of ferrous gluconate with water or fruit juice (not with milk) and drink the mixture through a straw. You may also clean your teeth with baking soda once for week to treat any tooth staining.

• Store ferrous gluconate at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Hold the liquid medication from freezing.

What happens if I miss a dose?

• Take the missed doze as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your following doze, wait before then to take the medication and skip the missed doze. Do not take extra medication to create up the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

• Search abnormal medical attention if you think you have used too many of this medication, or if a baby has accidentally swallowed it. An overdose of ferrous gluconate can be fatal to a child.

What must I avoid while taking ferrous gluconate?

• Do not take any vitamin or mineral supplements that your doctor has not predesigned or recommended.

• Avoid taking an antibiotic medication within 2 hours till or after you take ferrous gluconate. This is especially significant if you are taking an antibiotic such as ciprofloxacin (Cipro), demeclocycline (Declomycin), doxycycline (Adoxa, Doryx, Oracea, Vibramycin), levofloxacin (Levaquin), lomefloxacin (Maxaquin), minocycline (Dynacin, Minocin, Solodyn, Vectrin), norfloxacin (Noroxin), ofloxacin (Floxin), or tetracycline (Brodspec, Panmycin, Sumycin, Tetracap).

• Determined foods can also create it harder for your body to absorb ferrous gluconate. Avoid taking this medicine within 1 hour till or 2 hours after eating fish, meat, liver, and intact corn or "fortified" breads or cereals.

• Avoid using antacids without your doctor's advice. Use only the specific type of antacid your doctor recommends. Antacids contain various medicines and some types can create it harder for your body to absorb ferrous gluconate.

What are the possible side effects of ferrous gluconate?

• Get abnormal medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your person, lips, tongue, or throat.

• Call your doctor if you have serious side effects such as:

· bright red blood in your stools; or

· pain in your chest or throat when swallowing a ferrous gluconate tablet.

• Smaller serious side effects may include:

· constipation, diarrhea;

· nausea, vomiting, heartburn;

· stomach pain, upset stomach;

· black or dark-colored stools or urine; or

· temporary staining of the teeth.

What another drugs will affect ferrous gluconate?

• The next drugs can interact with ferrous gluconate. Speak your doctor if you use any of these:

· acetohydroxamic acid (Lithostat);

· cimetidine (Tagamet);

· deferoxamine (Desferal);

· etidronate (Didronel);

· dimercaprol (an injection used to treat poisoning by arsenic, lead, or mercury);

· penicillamine (Cuprimine); or

· pancrelipase (Cotazym, Creon, Ilozyme, Pancrease, Ultrase).

• This list is not complete and there may be another drugs that can interact with ferrous gluconate. Speak your doctor about all your prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal commodity, and drugs predesigned by another doctors. Do not start a new medicine without telling your doctor.
