ERGOT DERIVATIVES AND TETRACYCLINES
Several patients taking ergotamine or dihydroergotamine developed ergotism when
they were also given doxycycline or tetracycline. Liver impairment may have been a contributory factor.
The general importance of this interaction is uncertain, but it seems likely to be
small. However, note that one of the manufacturers of ergotamine actually
recommends that the concurrent use of tetracycline should be avoided. Impaired
liver function may possibly be a contributory factor in this interaction and it may be prudent to monitor patients with this risk factor more closely.
