Combined hormonal
contraceptives and progestogen-only oral
contraceptives are considered to be less reliable during treatment with
rifabutin. Similarly, emergency hormonal
contraceptives are considered to be less effective in those taking
rifabutin. The etonogestrel implant is also expected to be less effective.
For advice on the use of
enzyme inducers, such as
rifabutin, and
contraceptives, see
contraceptives. It has been recommended that an alternative or additional form of contraception should also be used for 4 to 8 weeks after stopping
rifabutin.
