Three case reports describe myopathy or rhabdomyolysis in patients given
colchicine and
fluvastatin,
pravastatin or
simvastatin. It seems possible that this reaction could occur with
colchicine and any statin.
Although this interaction is rare it is serious. Given the evidence available it seems likely to occur with all
statins, although this has not been clearly demonstrated. All patients taking
statins should be warned about the
symptoms of myopathy and told to report muscle pain or weakness. It would be prudent to reinforce this advice if they are given
colchicine.
