BUSPIRONE AND HERBAL MEDICINES OR DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS

A patient taking buspirone developed marked CNS adverse effects after starting to take herbal medicines including St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum), melatonin and Ginkgo biloba. The serotonin syndrome, has been reported in a patient who
took buspirone with St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum).
The general significance of these cases is unclear, but they highlight the importance of considering the adverse effects of herbal medicines when they are used with conventional medicines.
