bexarotene may theoretically increase the
metabolism of
contraceptives, thereby reducing both their
serum levels and their
efficacy.
The manufacturer advises that additional non-hormonal contraception (such as a barrier method) should be used to avoid the risk of contraceptive failure. They point out that this is particularly important because if contraceptive failure were to occur, the foetus might be exposed to the teratogenic effects of
bexarotene.
