Efavirenz decreased the maximum plasma levels and the AUC of itraconazole by 37% and 39%, respectively. The pharmacokinetics of efavirenz were not affected by itraconazole. The manufacturers of efavirenz say that alternatives to itraconazole should be considered. If there are no appropriate alternatives, it might be prudent to increase the dose of itraconazole, with increased monitoring for efficacy and toxicity of the combination.
