What is the most significant information I must know about azithromycin ophthalmic?

• You must not use this medicine if you are allergic to azithromycin.

• Do not use this medicine while wearing contact lenses. Azithromycin ophthalmic may contain a preservative that can discolor soft contact lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after using azithromycin ophthalmic till putting your contact lenses in.

• You must not wear contact lenses while you still have active symptoms of the eye infection you are treating.

Use this medicine for the full predesigned length of time. Your symptoms may improve till the infection is completely cleared.

• Serious side effects of azithromycin ophthalmic may include eye drainage or crusting, severe eye irritation, feeling like there is something in your eye, watery eyes, heighten easy sensitivity, eye redness or swelling, any signs of new infection.

• Although the risk of serious side effects is low when azithromycin ophthalmic is used in the eyes, side effects can occur if the medication is absorbed into your bloodstream. Stop using the medication and get abnormal medical help if you have any signs of a severe skin reaction, such as fever, sore throat, swelling in your person or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the person or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.

What is azithromycin ophthalmic?

Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that fights bacteria.

Azithromycin ophthalmic (for the eyes) is used to treat eye infections caused by bacteria.

Azithromycin ophthalmic may also be used for purposes not listed in this medicine guide.

What must I discuss with my health care provider till taking azithromycin ophthalmic?

• You must not use this medicine if you are allergic to azithromycin (Zithromax).

• FDA pregnancy category B. Azithromycin ophthalmic is not expected to harm an unborn child. Speak your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.

• It is not known whether azithromycin ophthalmic passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing child. Do not use this medicine without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

How must I use azithromycin ophthalmic?

• Use exactly as predesigned by your doctor. Do not use in larger or less amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

Azithromycin ophthalmic is generally applied twice daily for 2 days, and then once daily for 5 more days. Follow your doctor's instructions.

• Wash your hands till using eye medication.

• To apply the eye drops:

· Tilt your head back slightly and pull down your lower eyelid to make a little pocket. Keep the dropper above the eye with the tip down. Look up and away from the dropper as you squeeze out a drop, then close your eye.

· Use only the number of drops your doctor has prescribed.

· Gently press your finger to the internal corner of the eye (near your nose) for about 1 minute to hold the liquid from draining into your tear duct.

· If you use more than one drop in the same eye, wait about 5 minutes till putting in the following drop.

· Also wait at least 10 minutes till using any another eye drops that your doctor has prescribed.

• Do not let the tip of the dropper to touch any surface, including your eyes or hands. If the dropper becomes contaminated it could reason an infection in your eye, which can lead to vision loss or serious hurt to the eye.

• Do not use the eye drops if the liquid has changed colors or has particles in it. Call your doctor for a new prescription.

Use this medicine for the full predesigned length of time. Your symptoms may improve till the infection is completely cleared.

• Store an unopened bottle of azithromycin ophthalmic in the refrigerator. Do not freeze.

• After opening the bottle, you may hold the medicine at room temperature for up to 14 days. Hold the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Protect from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?

• Use the missed doze as soon as you remember. Skip the missed doze if it is nearly time for your following scheduled doze. Do not use extra medication to create up the missed dose.

• Search abnormal medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

What must I avoid while taking azithromycin ophthalmic?
