Amphotericin B and
corticosteroids can cause potassium loss and salt and water retention, which can have adverse effects on cardiac function.
Monitor electrolytes (especially potassium, which should be closely monitored in any patient taking amphotericin B) and fluid balance if amphotericin B is given with
corticosteroids. The elderly would seem to be particularly at risk. Note that the
renal toxicity of amphotericin B may be associated with sodium depletion.
