Chronic heavy drinking reduces
serum phenytoin concentrations so that above average doses of
phenytoin may be needed to maintain adequate levels. Moderate drinking appears to be safe in those taking
phenytoin.
Although above average doses are likely to be needed in heavy drinkers be aware that patients with liver impairment usually need lower doses of
phenytoin, so the picture may be more complicated.
